Recycling Etc. Newsletter
Half of all the carpet manufactured from polyester in teh United States is made from recycled plastic bottles.

One very important goal of SWANCC’s Solid Waste Management Plan is to recycle as much of our garbage as possible. Since 1995, SWANCC communities have recycled over 670,000 tons of recyclable material.

While saving over two years of landfill space, our communities have also avoided nearly $28 million in disposal fees. These numbers clearly illustrate the importance of our recycling programs. Unfortunately, recycling has not kept pace with our growing waste generation. In 2002, member communities recycled 82,291 tons of material compared to 85,911 tons in 1998, down 4.2%. During the same period, the amount of waste landfilled increased from 235,408 tons to 259,101 tons, an increase of 10.1%. SWANCC has launched a variety of exciting projects to reverse this trend. Within the Spring 2009 Recycling Etc you will find out about these programs.

Education programs are an important benefit of SWANCC membership. This newsletter describes programs SWANCC is offering to our area schools.

We hope you find this newsletter both enlightening and useful.
