Frequently Asked Questions: What is SWANCC? The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) is a unit of local government and a non-profit corporation. Twenty-three communities in northern Cook County joined to form SWANCC in 1988. SWANCC developed a long-term plan to manage the region's municipal solid waste that was adopted by its Board of Directors in 1991. Since then, SWANCC has been at work implementing this economically stable and environmentally safe solution to the region's solid waste management needs. What can I recycle in my town? You can find out what materials your community recycles by looking at the recycling grid. Household Chemical Waste collections: I have chemicals to get rid of. What is the best way for me to do so? You can take your chemicals to a Household Chemical Waste collection. SWANCC keeps an updated listing of these events on our website. A list of acceptable and unacceptable wastes are listed on this page as well. How can I be reminded of special collection events? You can sign up for SWANCC's elist and never forget another event! Fill out the Elist form and SWANCC will send you information on upcoming collection events and other useful information. What can I do with my Oil-based Paint and Latex Paint? Oil-based paint can be taken to a Household Chemical Waste collection. Latex paint can be disposed of at home. Learn how to dispose of latex paint. Where can I take batteries to be disposed of properly? A list of locations to take button cell, lead-acid, lithium ion, mercury, and nickel-cadmium batteries is listed on our site. Find a location near you. Where can I take my old computer? SWANCC hosts two computer and electronic collection events each year. One in the spring and one in the fall. Learn more about computer and electronics recycling. Who will take my bulk garbage? A list of Junk Haulers can be found on our site. Another option is to bring your garbage to SWANCC’s Glenview Transfer Station yourself. Learn about the Transfer Station. Where can I take old athletic shoes? SWANCC has teamed with Nike for the past six years for Athletic Shoe Recycling. A drive is held each Spring. The shoes are made into Nike Grind, which is used in athletic surfaces, courts and fields. Can I take my athletic shoes somewhere now? Currently there are several sport stores that are accepting shoes in conjunction with Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program. Find a location near you. Where can I dispose of my propane tank? SWANCC provides a list of businesses who accept propane tanks. Find a location near you. Can I rent a roll-off? SWANCC has a roll-off program. Residents can rent a roll-off for only $299 for five days. Learn details on this program. My garbage/recycling was not picked up as scheduled. Who can I talk to?
